MOTOR THIRD PARTY LIABILITY INSURANCE
Motor Third Party Liability (MTPL) insurance connected with the possession of a vehicle

According to art. 480 of the Code on Insurance the MTPL insurance covers the civil liability of motor vehicle holders when the holder or driver of a vehicle causes loss or injury to others in using that vehicle on the territory of Republic Of Bulgaria as well in all countries members of the Green card system in accordance of the provisions of the law in force. The caused damages and bodily injuries are covered by the insurer of the liable vehicle.


The EEA countries, Andorra, Switzerland and Serbia which national Bureaux are signatories of the Multilateral Guarantee Agreement agreed that if a vehicle is normally based in one of the countries enters the territory of another country, the owner or holder of the vehicle is considered insured for MTPL insurance.

What does it cover the TPL?

The TPL policy, concluded with a Bulgarian Insurer covers the civil liability of owners and drivers of motor vehicles for any bodily injury and/or death and/or property damage they have caused with the insured vehicle to third parties, for which they are legally liable according to the effective legislation.

Limits of Liability
1. for non-material and material damages as a result of bodily injury or death – up to BGN 10,000,000 for one event, irrespective of the number of injured persons.
2. for property damages – up to BGN 2,000,000 for one event, irrespective of the number of affected persons.
Period of insurance
- 1 /one/ year

How to act?

Traffic accidents caused by an uninsured foreign motor vehicles on the territory of Bulgaria:


- Call the Traffic Police
- Obtain a Police Accident Report
- take a note of the date of the traffic accident, the registration plate number of the responsible vehicle , the make and type of the vehicle

If the responsible vehicle is with a registration plate number from a country of the EEC, Switzerland or Andorra – refer to the NBBMI.

If the responsible vehicle is with a registration plate number from a third country – refer to the Guarantee Fund.

Traffic accidents abroad, caused by an uninsured foreign motor vehicle.

Accident in a Member State of the EEC, Switzerland or Andorra:
- Call the Traffic Police
- Obtain a Police Accident Report

- If in the country, where the accident occurred, it is not obligatory to call the police, only a bilateral Agreed Statement of Facts on Motor Vehicle Accident could be completed
- fill in the date of the traffic accident, the registration plate number of the responsible vehicle, the make and type of the vehicle
- the Statement should obligatory be signed by the responsible driver as well

Accidents in countries outside the EEC, Switzerland and Andorra:
Refer to the Guarantee Fund of the country, where the traffic accident took place.
